Today eligible students with no more than 10 absences for the entire school year were invited to our End of Year Attendance BBQ. Due to the weather, we held the BBQ inside, but we still had a great time celebrating the more than 488 students who have had excellent attendance this school year.

We have 4 early dismissal days this week, June 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th. Remember with WCPS attendance policy, students cannot have more than 5 unexcused missed days in the marking term, or all of their grades will change to zeros. Early dismissal days do count as full days of school. For our last incentive, students who have missed 2 or less days of school from April 22-June 12th, will be entered in a drawing for Beats Headphones! We have 6 headphones to give away, but you must be present on June 13th to receive the headphones if you are a winner. 🎧Also, the top 3 homerooms for each grade level will receive water ice on June 13th. 🍧#ArriveToThrive

It Starts Here: An Entrepreneurial Journey! On Thursday, May 15th, the Young Business Leaders Signature School Program presented their very first Business Showcase to over 140 guests. Our students are grounded in the entrepreneurial mindset by learning the importance of failure and how to iterate. This event was designed to give our students an opportunity to showcase their very own business concepts that they have been developing all year! The goal is for our students to receive feedback to refine their ideas and potentially market and sell their own products and services in the future within our community. This event also provided an opportunity to hear from local inventor, Robert “RJ” Batts, inventor of the Tip Tough on his journey from a middle school student here in Wicomico County to successful entrepreneur. When RJ was 12, he became consumed with the idea that there had to be a way to help his dad, a professional chef, protect his hands from getting cut. The Tip Tough’s big break nationally came in November 2021 when RJ appeared on the new small business pitch show America’s Big Deal. Small businesses pitch their products to America and the product that has the highest sales by the end of the show gets to make a big deal with one of three major retailers. RJ won the show with his Tip Tough and struck a $100,000 deal with Joy Mangano of QVC. A special thank you to our parents for supporting our students, our custodial staff for helping to setup and take down our event, our wonderful dedicated teachers, and our school system leadership in supporting our students business, marketing, and entrepreneurial journeys. We are proud to announce that Wicomico County Public Schools has once again earned the distinction of being named one of the Best Communities for Music Education. This is the 16th time in the past 19 years, and the 14th consecutive year, that Wicomico Schools has earned this award from the NAMM Foundation. Our students receive an outstanding music education in chorus, band, orchestra, school performances, parades and more. The award is directly related to the dedication and quality of our teachers as well as the support we receive from WCPS administration, school-based administrators, the Board of Education, and our community. Thank you to all of the excellent Wicomico music educators who made this Best Communities for Music Education recognition possible. Here's a sampling of music education photos from our schools, with more to come soon.

Students in the Young Business Leaders Signature School Program at Wicomico Middle traveled to Towson University today for the annual Student Achievement Awards by the Maryland Council on Economic Education. Sunny Crouse, Aaliyah Jeannot, Ziara Ortiz-Allende, Alexis Robinson, Joshua Tolliver, along with Teacher Coach, Mr. Brian Yates achieved the Stock Market Game Fall Middle School First Place Award in the South Region, with earnings totaling $114,752 (simulated money). The Maryland Council on Economic Education sponsors an annual online Stock Market Game for teachers and student teams that teaches about the stock markets, the American economic system, and the global economy. It’s not just a game, it’s education for life for the hundreds of Maryland teams from elementary through high school that compete. Groups of students were given virtual dollars to invest once they had researched and identified stocks they wanted to purchase and trade. Pictured representing the team, program, and Wicomico Middle at Towson University were Sunny Crouse, Ziara Ortiz-Allende, Alexis Robinson, Mr. Brian Yates (Teacher/Coach), and Mr. James McCrobie (Student Achievement and Assessment Facilitator).

During the week of May 19th-23 and make ups through May 28th, Wicomico Middle students in grades 6-8 will take the i-Ready Diagnostic for ELA and all grades 6-8 students will also take the MAP diagnostic for math. In accordance with state and local requirements, we will give students this diagnostic to determine their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year in English and mathematics.
